In Europe, according to an ancient tradition, when one wanted to ask the Blessed Virgin for a special grace or favor, it was customary to offer her one thousand Hail Mary's on a particular Marian feast day or on the eve of a feast day.
The Annunciation is the feast day that celebrates the Angel Gabriel's announcement to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the conception of Our Lord. Some consider this second in importance only to the Feast of the Resurrection (Easter). Note that without the INCARNATION (when Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit in Mary's womb) there would not have been a birth of Jesus (Christmas).
